March 2023 Fishing Report

March it seemed, brought with it a year’s worth of weather! So while fishing varied day to day, it was overall very good, with many good catches of rainbows, plus a few browns and blues. Good weather later in March produced enormous buzzer hatches, providing quality nymph fishing and the first real opportunities for anglers to effectively use dry flies. A number of you reported taking fish from the surface, not the most prolific tactic, however watching your fly be eaten off the surface beats most things in fishing.

Top tactics have been buzzers fished with bloodworm, lures fished with buzzers and general nymphs like a Diawl Bach and dries with buzzers fished below them. Floating, intermediate, slow sink and sink tip lines have all been used to good effect over the very varied conditions.

Here’s to April bringing more settled weather and improving sport at and around the surface to buzzer and olive hatches later in the month and hopefully a good fall of hawthorn fly.
